Bernie is an Iowa farm girl transplanted to Raleigh, North Carolina. Her husband Ken hikes the greenways taking nature photographs. Together, they enjoy dinner out, attending local writer events, watching British television, and spending time with their granddaughters.

Bernie’s Iowa childhood, her travels in the States and Europe, and her contemporary life in Raleigh influence her short stories and essays. Bernie’s dream came true when Moonshine Cove Publishing published  her debut novel, I Never Told You. A collection of her ghost stories is in the works at Devil's Party Press to be released in April 2024.

Bernie has Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in English from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. One of her stories was nominated for a Pushcart Prize, and another one appeared in an anthology of contest winners by Grateful Steps Publishing. She is a writer-in-residence at the Weymouth Center for the Arts and Humanities, a member of the Women’s Fiction Writers Association and The Author's Guild.
